Be Like Water
파운드리 서울은 2025년 8월 23일부터 10월 4일까지 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 작가 미란다 포레스터(Miranda Forrester)의 개인전 《Be Like Water》을 개최한다. 유려한 선과 섬세한 감각으로 따뜻하고 일상적인 장면을 그리는 포레스터는 기존의 규범과 시선에서 벗어나 자유로운 존재로서 느끼는 평온함과 공동체적 존재로서의 기쁨에 대해 사유한다. 서울에서 처음으로 작업을 소개하는 이번 전시에서 포레스터는 친밀함의 공간이자 경계의 공간인 ‘물(bodies of water)’을 주제로 한 신작들을 선보인다.
포레스터의 회화는 인물들이 여가를 즐기고, 아이를 돌보며, 서로에게 기대어 쉬는 등 일상의 고요하고 평온한 순간을 포착한다. 가정적인 공간을 배경으로 한 여성들의 친밀하고 사적인 장면은 서구 미술사 전반에서 흑인 퀴어 여성의 존재가 배제되어 온 현실을 환기하는 동시에 여성으로 살아가는 기쁨과 긍지를 기념하고 욕망하는 주체로서의 즐거움과 환희를 공유한다.
포레스터의 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 구상과 추상, 존재와 소멸의 경계에 위치하며, 주로 작가와 친밀한 실제 인물들을 기반으로 한다. 이들은 개별성을 지니는 동시에 모호하고 유동적인 존재로 서로 관계를 맺는다. 포레스터는 관람자 역시 작품 속 인물들과 마주하고 자신을 투영할 수 있는 여지를 제공하는데, 이러한 경험은 작가의 독특한 물질적 어휘, 특히 회화의 지지체에서 비롯된다. 포레스터는 투명하고 단단한 폴리카보네이트를 캔버스로 사용하여 현실과 회화 사이의 경계를 흐린다. 이러한 독특한 소재 사용은 여성성, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티 등의 복잡하고 미묘한 개념을 물질성을 통해 암시하며, 정체성과 소속감의 본질에 대한 섬세하고 유동적인 사유를 이끌어낸다. 나아가 반사되는 표면, 투명한 캔버스를 통해 드러나는 벽면과 그림자는 화면에 물리적 깊이를 부여하며, 다층적인 시각 경험을 가능하게 한다.
포레스터는 유럽의 고전 건축물을 참조해 화면을 구성하며, 자유와 아름다움, 변화의 가능성이 물리적 환경 속에서 어떻게 시각적으로 구현될 수 있는지를 실험한다. 과거 권위를 과시하기 위해 사용되었던 바로크 양식의 화려한 건축 요소들은 작가의 비판적 시선 아래 배제와 소외의 역사를 드러낸다. 포레스터는 이러한 고전 건축 양식을 흑인 퀴어 여성들의 일상적이고 내밀한 장면들과 교차하며 공간의 의미를 전복하고, 새로운 서사의 가능성을 제안한다. 최근 작품에서 포레스터는 회화의 배경을 내밀한 실내 공간에서 출발해 외부 공간으로 확장한다. 이를 통해 인물들이 물, 바람 등 자연 요소들과 깊이 교감하고 타인과 더욱 능동적으로 관계 맺을 수 있는 장소를 마련하며, 보다 개방되고 해방된 존재로 나아갈 가능성을 연다.
이번 전시에서 포레스터는 ‘물(bodies of water)’을 주제로 한 신작들을 선보이며, 배리 젠킨스(Barry Jenkins)와 셀린 시아마(Céline Sciamma)의 영화, K. 패트릭(K. Patrick)과 줄리아 암필드(Julia Armfield)의 문학, 자넬 모네이(Janelle Monáe)의 음악과 같이 그녀에게 깊은 영향을 준 다양한 서사적, 형식적 참조들을 섬세하게 엮어낸다. ‘물’은 고정된 경계나 이분법적 질서에서 벗어난 탈 구조의 장소이자 해방의 장소이며, 정체성과 감각이 해체되고 재구성되는 변화와 재탄생의 공간이다. 포레스터는 인물과 공간이 흐르듯 얽힌 화면을 통해 기존의 규범과 시선에서 벗어나 자유롭게 존재하고 교류하는 모습을 그린다. 특히 이번 신작에서 ‘물’을 매개로 자아 인식과 타인과의 정서적 교감의 과정을 부드럽고 섬세하게 그려내며, 자유로운 존재와 포용적 공동체의 가능성과 아름다움을 찬미한다. 인물들은 수영장에서 휴식을 취하거나 서로에게 기대며, 해방감과 취약함이 공존하는 장면 속에 놓인다. 배경이 되는 물가는 여성들이 사회적 억압에서 벗어나 자신의 내면을 마주하고 자아를 탐색해 나가는 무대로 기능한다. 포레스터의 화면은 따뜻함과 포용, 기쁨과 해방의 감각으로 인물들이 자신의 일상적 존재와 욕망 속에서 성스럽게 머무를 수 있는 세계를 펼쳐 보이며, 나아가 고정된 경계를 흐리며 관람자를 더 깊은 정서적 세계로 초대한다.
파운드리 서울에서 열리는 이번 전시는 포레스터가 구축해 온 회화 언어가 새로운 문화적 맥락 속에서 다시 숨 쉬는 장이 된다. 이는 그동안 충분히 조명 받지 못했던 서사와 정체성의 목소리에 공간을 내어주며, 새로움과 다양함이 공존하는 장소로서의 서울과 그 안에서 관계를 맺고 살아가는 모든 이들의 이야기를 따뜻하게 환영하고 기념한다.
FOUNDRY SEOUL is pleased to present Be Like Water, a solo exhibition by London-based artist Miranda Forrester, on view from August 23 to October 4, 2025. With fluid lines and a delicate gaze, Forrester composes scenes of everyday intimacy, reflecting upon the serenity found in a free existence beyond social binaries and perspectives, as well as the sense of joy and belonging experienced within a community. In Be Like Water, Forrester’s first exhibition in Seoul, the bodies of water featured in her new works are spaces of intimacy and liminality, inviting freedom, fluidity, and transformation.
Forrester’s paintings capture peaceful, calm moments from daily life, such as people lying in repose, caring for children, or leaning into one another. Depicting intimate and private scenes of women in domestic settings, her work not only recalls the historical exclusion of Black queer women from Western art history but also celebrates the joy and pride of womanhood, as well as the pleasure of being a desiring subject.
The figures in her paintings exist along the boundary of figuration and abstraction, between presence and disappearance, and are often based on real individuals close to the artist. While maintaining their individuality, they form relationships with one another as fluid and ambiguous beings. Forrester also offers viewers the possibility to project themselves into the work, an experience facilitated by the artist’s distinctive material vocabulary, particularly through the painting’s supports. The line between reality and creation is blurred by Forrester’s choice of polycarbonate as her surface, a material recognized for its transparency and rigidity. This unique use of materials subtly evokes complex and nuanced ideas around femininity, gender, and sexuality through materiality, eliciting tender, flowing reflections on identity and belonging. Furthermore, the reflective surfaces and the walls and shadows visible through the transparent polycarbonate canvas add physical depth to the image and allow for a multilayered visual experience.
Forrester constructs her compositions with reference to classical European architecture, experimenting with how freedom, beauty, and the potential for transformation can be visually manifested within physical environments. The ornate architectural elements of the Baroque style, once used to vaunt authority, are recontextualized through her critical lens to reveal a history of exclusion and marginalization. By juxtaposing modes of classical architecture with everyday, intimate scenes of Black queer women, Forrester subverts traditional ideas of spatial or locative significance and suggests new narrative possibilities. In her recent works, the setting expands from private interior spaces to outdoor environments. This shift creates spaces where the figures can commune with elements of nature like water and wind, and more actively connect with one another, opening the potential for freer, more liberated existences.
This exhibition unveils new works centered on the theme of bodies of water, weaving together a rich tapestry of narrative and formal references that have profoundly influenced her, including films by Barry Jenkins and Céline Sciamma, literature by K. Patrick and Julia Armfield, and music by Janelle Monáe. Water, as it is explored in her work, is a site of deconstruction and liberation—a place beyond fixed boundaries or the binary order—where identity and sense are deconstructed and reconstructed, a space of transformation and rebirth. Her paintings depict a world where figures and spaces flow together, interacting beyond existing norms and perspectives. Especially in these new works, she delicately illustrates the processes of self-awareness and emotional connection with others through water as a medium, celebrating the beauty and potential of liberated beings and inclusive communities. Her figures are resting in swimming pools or leaning on one another—moments where openness and vulnerability coexist. The waterside serves as a stage where women, freed from social oppression, encounter their inner selves and explore their identities. Forrester’s paintings unfold a world imbued with warmth, inclusion, joy, and freedom, where her subjects dwell sacredly in their everyday existence and desire. In doing so, she blurs fixed boundaries and invites viewers into a deeper emotional realm.
The exhibition at FOUNDRY SEOUL provides a new cultural context for Forrester’s evolving painterly language. It gives space to voices and identities that have long been underrepresented, warmly embracing and commemorating the stories of all those who live and come together in Seoul, a place where newness and diversity can coexist.
