미시간을 기반으로 활동하는 작가 레이 클라인(b. 1995)의 화면은 예측할 수 없는 서사 속에서 일상적인 오브제와 낯선 맥락을 결합한다. 작가는 대상을 기존의 시간적, 공간적 맥락에서 분리해 무한한 색과 형태의 평면 위에 배치하며, 이로써 통제력이 사라지는 순간을 포착하고 극적인 장면을 연출한다. 이러한 장면들은 장난스러움과 임박한 재앙 사이의 미묘한 긴장감을 담고 있다. 반짝이는 샹들리에와 검을 연상시키는 촛대부터 친숙하면서도 환상적인 생명체까지 그녀가 그려내는 이미지는 미지의 야생과 조화를 이루려는 인류의 오랜 시도를 형상화한다.

Based in Michigan, Rae Klein (b. 1995) concentrates the everyday with the uncanny, distilling her subjects from their native time and space, and superimposing them on endless planes of color and form. Her work probes the moment control slips away, rendering uncanny, theatrical scenes that sit between whimsy and imminent calamity. From glittering chandeliers and sword-like candelabra to creatures familiar and fantastical, her imagery serves to realize the iconographic endeavors of mankind to reconcile the wilderness of the unknown.
