장명식은 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 1991년생 미디어 아티스트로 모호하고 유동적인 젤리의 특성에서 영감을 받아 현실 세계에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 형태와 질감을 가진 ‘초현실적 젤리’를 창조합니다. 비정형의 드로잉에서 시작하여 입체적 형체와 동작을 부여하고 그 위에 젤리의 반투명하고 반짝이는 표면을 덧입혀 만들어낸 초현실적 젤리는 익숙하면서도 낯설고, 구체적이면서도 모호하며, 귀여우면서도 진지한 매력을 발산합니다. 해양 생물의 움직임을 비롯하여, 바우하우스의 무대 실험, K-pop, 현대 무용 등 신체와 공간과의 상호작용과 시각적인 리듬에 영감을 받은 작가는 정교한 렌더링으로 구현한 초현실적 젤리를 통해 관객의 상상력을 자극하며 인식과 감각의 새로운 가능성을 제시합니다.
Seoul-based media artist born in 1991, Myungsik Jang was inspired by the ambiguous and fluid characteristics of jelly. He creates a “surreal jelly” with a shape and texture unseen in the real world. Surreal Jelly starts with an atypical drawing given a 3D shape and motion. The artist then adds a translucent and shiny surface of jelly on top, to bring a familiar yet unfamiliar, specific yet ambiguous, and pleasant yet serious charm. Inspired by the visual rhythms and relationships between the body and space suggested by Bauhaus’ stage experiments, K-pop, modern dance as well as movements of marine life, the artist welcomes the audience to the intriguing and playful world of “surreal jelly” masterfully rendered.
